About Skype and D-Link
If you want to connect to the online Skype network and chat with other users, you must ensure the proper ports are open on your D-Link router. When you open a port through D-Link’s port forwarding feature, this gives data permission to travel from the Internet, through your router to specific programs on your computer. In order to forward the port for Skype, you must know your computer’s IP address and the Skype port number.
Finding the Skype Port
When you installed Skype on your computer, the program automatically assigned the client with a random port number. If Skype can’t use the port number it chose, it will default to ports number 80 and 443 as backup. Launch your Skype program, click “Tools” and click “Options.” Navigate to the Advanced section and select “Connection.” Record the default port number that appears in the incoming port text box.
Logging in to the D-Link Setup
Launch your Internet browser on your computer and type in the IP address for your D-Link router. The IP address 192.168.0.1 is the default number. When you press the “Enter” key, the router setup will prompt you for a username and password. The default administrator account uses “admin” as the username with a blank password. If you have changed these settings, use the administrator account information that you created. Once you log in to the prompt, you will have access to the D-Link setup.
Opening the Skype Port on D-Link
Navigate to the “Advanced” tab of your D-Link router setup to locate the port forwarding settings for your router. Place a check in the box next to the first open section of settings, type “Skype” as the program name and your computer’s IP address in the IP Address text box. Type the Skype port number in both the Start and Ending text boxes, then click the “Save Settings” button to update your D-Link settings. Do this for your default Skype port as well as ports number 80 and 443. Once you have finished configuring the setup, you will be able to use all of the chat features on the Skype client.
